Voice to Text for Drafts

Drafts is where text starts. It's your inbox for ideas, the launchpad for everything you write. But typing on-the-go or during a thought burst slows you down. Blurt lets you hold a button, speak your thought, and release. Your text appears instantly in Drafts, ready to process with actions or send anywhere. No friction between thought and capture. Just talk and write.

The Typing Problem

Ideas vanish faster than you can type them

You're walking, driving, or in the middle of something when an idea hits. It's brilliant. You know exactly what you want to capture. But by the time you pull out your phone, open Drafts, and start typing, half the thought has evaporated. The insight that felt so clear ten seconds ago is now fragmented and incomplete.

Quick capture isn't quick when you're typing

Drafts is built for speed. Open, type, done. But typing on a phone keyboard or even a laptop still takes time. When you're in capture mode and thoughts are flowing, your fingers can't keep up with your brain. You end up with shorthand notes that need expansion later, or you lose the thread entirely while hunting for the right keys.

Context switching kills the flow

You're deep in a creative session, reading, or working on something else when a related thought surfaces. Stopping to type it out pulls you out of your flow state. You lose your place in what you were doing. The cost of capturing the thought is higher than the value of the thought itself, so you let it go.

Long-form drafts never get started

You have an essay, blog post, or document in your head. You could talk through the whole thing in ten minutes. But sitting down to type it feels like a big commitment. The blank page is intimidating. So the draft stays as a vague idea in your head instead of becoming a tangible first draft in Drafts.

Actions work best with complete text

Drafts' power is in its actions. Send to email, create a task, post to a service. But actions work best when the text is complete and well-formed. Rushed, abbreviated notes typed in haste don't flow well through actions. You end up editing before sending, adding friction to what should be a seamless workflow.

How It Works

Blurt works seamlessly with Drafts. Capture complete thoughts by voice, then process them with any action in your library.

1

Open Drafts to a new draft

Start fresh or place your cursor in an existing draft where you want text to appear.

2

Hold your hotkey and talk

Press your chosen key, speak your thought naturally. Blurt adds punctuation and capitalization automatically.

3

Release and run your action

Your complete text appears in Drafts. Send it anywhere with an action, or let it sit in your inbox for later.

Real Scenarios

Starting blog posts and essays by talking

You've been meaning to write about a topic for weeks. Instead of facing the blank page, open Drafts and start talking. Walk through your argument, your examples, your conclusion. Ten minutes of speaking produces a rough draft that would have taken an hour to type. The hard part, getting ideas out of your head, is done. Now you just need to edit.

Quick task capture without breaking focus

You're deep in code when you remember you need to email the client about the timeline. Without leaving your editor, hit the Blurt hotkey and say: 'Email Sarah about revised delivery date. Include reason for delay and new timeline.' Release, and the task is in Drafts. Use an action to send it to your task manager. Back to coding without losing your mental context.

Meeting follow-ups captured in real time

The meeting just ended. You have three follow-up items and context that's fresh in your mind. Before you walk to your next commitment, hold the Blurt hotkey and speak each action item with its full context. 'Follow up with Mike about the API documentation. He mentioned the endpoints section is outdated and causing support tickets.' Three drafts, fully formed, ready to process.

Journal entries without the friction

You want to journal but typing feels like work. Open Drafts, hold the button, and just talk about your day, what you're thinking, what you're processing. Five minutes of talking produces a journal entry that reflects how you actually think. Use a Drafts action to append it to your journal file or send it to Day One.

Dictating emails before sending

You need to write a tricky email. Instead of typing and deleting and retyping, talk it out in Drafts first. 'Hi team, I wanted to give an update on the project timeline. We've hit a blocker with the third-party integration and need an additional week.' Once the draft sounds right, use an action to create the email. Compose by voice, send when ready.

Capturing research notes while reading

You're reading an article and an insight connects to something you're working on. Without leaving the article, activate Blurt and capture: 'Article about spaced repetition mentions optimal intervals match circadian rhythm. Connect this to the learning feature design.' The note lands in Drafts with full context. Tag it, file it, or let it sit until your next processing session.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Blurt work with Drafts actions?
Yes. Blurt inserts text into Drafts just like typing would. Once your spoken text appears in a draft, you can run any action on it: send to email, create a task, append to a file, post to a service, or anything else in your action library. The text is plain text with proper punctuation, ready for any workflow.
Can I use Blurt with Drafts on iPhone and iPad?
Blurt is a macOS menu bar app. It works with Drafts on your Mac but not directly on iPhone or iPad. However, since Drafts syncs across devices, you can capture text with Blurt on your Mac and access those drafts on your iPhone or iPad immediately.
How does Blurt compare to Drafts' built-in dictation?
Blurt offers higher accuracy transcription with automatic punctuation and capitalization. You don't need to say 'period' or 'comma' aloud. The hold-to-record interface is also faster for quick captures. Built-in dictation is free and works well for short phrases, but Blurt excels at longer dictation and produces cleaner text.
How much does Blurt cost?
Blurt's free tier gives you first 1,000 words free at no cost. That's enough for dozens of quick captures or several longer dictation sessions. Pro is $10 per month or $99 per year for unlimited words. This is separate from any Drafts subscription.
Does Blurt work with Drafts workspaces and tags?
Blurt inserts text into whatever draft is currently open. If you're in a specific workspace or have tags applied, your workflow continues as normal. After Blurt inserts your text, you can tag the draft, move it to a workspace, or apply any action just like you would with typed text.
Can I use Blurt to append to existing drafts?
Yes. Place your cursor in an existing draft where you want text to appear, then use Blurt. The spoken text inserts at the cursor position. This works great for adding to running lists, continuing a draft you started earlier, or appending notes to an existing document.
Does Blurt work on Windows or Linux?
Blurt is macOS only. We focused on creating the best possible Mac experience with native menu bar integration and system-level keyboard shortcuts. Windows and Linux versions are not currently available.
